A Ph.D. student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago, David Schalliol is academically and artistically interested in issues of social stratification and meaning in the social and physical worlds. In addition to his sociological and photographic activities, David plays an active role on several websites, including his work as Founder and Editor of metroblossom and Managing Editor ofGapers Block. < David Schalliol blog>
with this Isolated Building Studies David Schlliol is simply showing the beauty of buildings constructed to form a neighborhood but confronted with the truth of standing alone.
Isolated buildings are particularly useful for the exploration of neighborhood transformation and its social correlates because they are immediately recognized as unusual.

soccer and architecture
Since Herzog & de Meuron designed not only the allianz arena but also the bird’s nest, one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world, large events seek for their own way to express ideas and statements through architecture. next year the soccer worldcup takes place in south africa and it’s just time to take a look at the emerging architecture. the soccer city stadium in Johannesburg is a simple but quite fitting design for an african stadium. designed by the american specialists for public spaces populous together with Boogertman + Partners the stadium shell remind us of an african pot.
The calabash, or African pot, was selected as being the most recognizable object to represent what would automatically be associated with the African continent and not any other.
The calabash, or ‘melting pot of African cultures’, sits on a raised podium, on top of which is located a ‘pit of fire’. Thus the pot sits in a depression, which is the ‘pit of fire’, as if it were being naturally fired. < soccer city web page >
The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth shell be announced due to it’s beautiful imagination where as the Moses Mabhida Stadium is spectacular for it’s construction of the roof. The so called skywalk, or simply large bow that holds the huge span of the roof shell also be used as observation deck connected with a cable car.

Valentin Jeck [A-photography #1]

Stunning architecture and brilliant images are quite often related! So what happens if atmospherical architecture meets photography of the highest quality? One example I found are the Swiss architects afgh Gabrielle Hächler & Andreas Fuhrimann and the swiss photographer Valentin Jeck. Afgh are architects designing with clear lines and an enormous gratitude towards materiality and atmosphere. Valentin Jeck is a photographer with the preciseness of a Swiss watch and a clear vision. Their work together results in magnificent images of stunning architecture and scenery.
